The Mighty Mu Tau chapter of Phi Beta Sigma was founded by five men on the campus of Northeast Missouri State University, now Truman State University. These men were Lamont Jackson, Kelvin D. Cowsette, Craig K. Patton, Kevin Mitchell, and Tracy Gillespie and they were collectively known as S.S. Commander. S.S. Commander with the help of the Eta Gamma chapter at the University of Missouri-Columbia, entered Sigma land on March 29, 1980. These men and Bro. Raymond Roberts started the Mighty Mu Tau chapter. Bro. Kelvin Cowsette served as the first president.
After a period of inactivity, the chapter was reactivated through the efforts of Bro. George Mitchell and Bro. Steve Thompson.
Since then the chapter has made great strides. We have undergone new programming such as Sigma Slam, a basketball tournament to benefit our scholarship for a minority Truman student. Also, we annually sponsor an Interview and Resume Workshop, Toys for Tots, Black History Knowledge Bowl, the Evening of Blue and White Royalty, a ball sponsored with the ladies of the Upsilon Omicron chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., and the Stroll-A-Thon, in which the brothers stroll non-stop for hours straight to raise money for our national philanthropy.
